The Australian Literacy Educators’ Association is dedicated to the improvement of literacy development across all educational sectors and levels. ALEA provides support and professional development to educators and others interested in the teaching of literacy through international, national, state and local conferences, workshops and seminars, and initiatives. ALEA produces three highly ranked journals as well as position papers and other publications.

The National Conference attracts professionals from Early Years, Preschool, Primary, Secondary and Tertiary education sectors as well as those who have a personal interest in the development of literacy in all its forms. This includes authors, illustrators, publishing companies and resource developers from all sectors.

Conference Theme

Literacies of our learners: Understanding, responding, connecting

  • Literacies across families and communities – Understanding, responding to, and connecting with the ways children and families are literate beyond the classroom
  • Literacies for academic purposes – Understanding and responding to the demands of becoming literate within curriculum English and across disciplines
  • Pedagogies for differentiated literacy learning – Understanding literacy transitions by responding to differing strengths and developing capabilities among learners
