Conference Thursday

Day 1: Thursday July 9

Highlights: Preconference Institutes; Leadership Workshop; Registration and Welcome Reception

Why not start your day with a preconference Institute?

Our preconference institutes will be held at iconic Sydney locations and run by local experts. They offer participants ways to think about literacy across disciplines and explore the literacy demands of working within a specific discipline. Oh, and they are also lots of fun.

But be quick! Places are strictly limited, so sign up when you are completing your Conference Registration to secure your place.

All institutes begin at 10.00am and finish by 12.30pm

We are just finalising these now, but the venues and topics are:

  • Literacy and the Arts: Sydney Theatre Company
  • Literacy and History: Sydney Rocks Tour
  • Science literacies: Sydney Observatory
  • Literacy at the State Library (see the magnificent restoration of this amazing site)
  • Literacy and Writing: Macquarie University Martin Place Campus
  • Literacy and Technology: Apple

Registration opens at midday

Libby and her team at VMS will get you started with your conference experience at SMC Conference & Function Centre, 66 Goulburn Street Sydney

Opening Plenary and Welcome Reception from 5.00pm

Dr Jioji Ravulo will set the conference scene sharing stories and insights from his work across home, school and community settings. Oh, and he can sing too!

Jioji Ravulo is an Associate Professor at the University of Wollongong’s South West Sydney Campus in Liverpool. He has an extensive history in working across greater western Sydney and beyond with diversity and equity groups striving to create sustainable initiatives and resources through meaningful collaborations and partnerships.

And then it’s time to browse the Trade Booths in the Exhibitors’ Area and catch up with colleagues and friends old and new over some light refreshments.

The Conference Opening Event is included in your Registration, so make sure you tick that box when you register!

Leadership Workshop 3.00-5.00pm

Our leadership workshop is one of our most popular preconference events. Local Council committee members from across Australia work together to learn, develop plans and share ideas about even more wonderful work they can do with ALEA. If the Leadership Workshop interests you, be in touch with your ALEA State Director who can give you more details.
